The next organised walks are the Autumn 2026 Footpath Walks on Sunday 11th October starting at 2:45pm. These are free group walks with a leader. Just turn up at one of the starting points to join one of the seven walks, families and dogs are very welcome, and there is free tea and cakes in the Village Hall afterwards.
See below for starting points (in bold) and routes and further down the page a map of them all.
The Spring walks currently take place on the second Sunday in May and the Autumn walks on the second Sunday in October.
Newly designed maps of all seven routes are now available and notes on the walks are also available here (below) to be used as self-guided walks. There is a new website with all this and more – launched by Chaldon History Group on 10th May 2026 at the completion of a project to make Chaldon’s footpaths more accessible, funded by Chaldon Village Council. See Chaldon Footpaths & Walks.
Chaldon has a notable history of looking after its public paths and rights of way. In the 1920s, Martin Coles Harman, who gave Six Brothers Field to the village as an open space, was also involved in ensuring that rights of way in Chaldon were preserved, and indeed, enlarged.
Chaldon residents walked each of its footpaths regularly twice a year from the 1920s until a few years ago. This tradition was restarted in October 2020. There were six walks of varying lengths designed to cover the network of official paths and bridleways within the parish. Available here are PDFs of Guides for the six original Chaldon Walks. These Guides help to preserve the tradition of walking the paths and provide some interesting historical detail, as well as some nature notes. A seventh walk was added in October 2022 and is also available here.
Download and print off the notes / Guides and maps to take with you, or download onto your phone, as there is limited signal on the routes. The Guides were put together by Liz Bonsall with contributions from Adele Brand, Madeline Hutchins and Lizzy Maskey in 2020 and revised by Liz Bonsall in 2026.
The maps were created in 2025 by Martin Lubikowski, ML Design, Chaldon with information from Liz Bonsall and Madeline Hutchins and containing OS (Ordinance Survey) data. The funding for creating the maps came from the Chaldon History Group’s share of income raised at the Chaldon Fete for local organisations.
Note: timings given below are for walking the route, and you will need to add half an hour to an hour or more for stopping, reading the notes and looking at all the things mentioned.
