Chaldon 200 Years Ago

Saturday 8th November 2025

A talk by Liz Bonsall and Madeline Hutchins.

The talk showed what we know about our village in the 1820s from documents and archives. The Badcock map of 1825, made for the Reverend Thomas Welton of Chaldon was the key resource as well as the watercolour paintings by John and Edward Hassell.

Liz and Madeline explored what houses were there and who lived here. They showed what the inside and outside of the church looked like then. Liz had researched the baptism, marriage and burial records and much more from that time period. She explained how the administration of the parish worked, with the roles of the incumbent (rector), the church wardens, waywardens, overseers and constable.

The talk was held in Chaldon Village Hall. Proceeds (after costs) were given to the Friends of Chaldon Church, £261, to help with conservation of the church’s historic building.
